The New Copyright Law Comes Into Force

by Maya Ghita Gunadi

As we foreshadowed in the last two editions of our IP news, the new Copyright Law, being Law No. 19 of 2002 (the "New Copyright Law"), came into effect on 29 July 2003.

In this edition, we would like to write about the government and public response toward the New Copyright Law.

The new law has received a great deal of media coverage. In addition, many seminars have been held to welcome this New Copyright Law.

One of the seminars was held by the Directorate of Copyright, Industrial Design, Layout Design of Integrated Circuits and Trade Secret, Directorate General Intellectual Property Right, Department of Justice and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia. The seminar focused on the enforcement of the New Copyright Law and was targeted at shopping mall management. In this seminar the managers were advised to give more attention to and deliver warnings against the selling of pirated goods in the stores located in their malls. We understand that the message of the seminar was to give the message to such building management, that they are also responsible for the existence of the pirated products in their buildings.
